What Causes Hair Loss?
If you are wondering whether it is normal if you shed hair on a daily basis, then the answer is yes. However, the number of hair strands that should fall out daily should only be around fifty to a hundred hairs. If you think that you are losing more than the normal number, then it is time for you to recognize the early signs and symptoms of hair loss. There are many factors that can cause hair loss, such as the normal cycle of hair growth. If you are experiencing excessive shedding of the hair on your scalp but you are not sure why, read on to know more about the different hair loss causes
Drugs and Other Types of Medication
There are certain medications and drugs that can cause hair loss not only in men, but also in women and children. Hair loss may be attributed to these drugs being taken such as isotretinoin (anti-acne drugs), bezafibrate or clofibrate (lipid-reducing drugs), anticoagulant and other blood-thinning medication (warfarin), captopril, lisinopril, enalapril (blood pressure ACE inhibitors), amlodipine (drugs that are being used to regulate blood pressure), allopurinol (medication used to treat gout), chloroquine (anti-malarials), pramipexole and bromocriptine (medications to alleviate symptoms of the Parkinson’s disease), lithium or valproic acid (antidepressants and other drugs used to stabilize moods), anti-cancer drugs, anti-thyroid drugs, birth control pills and drugs used to treat epilepsy.
Skin Disorders and Other Infections
Grown men and women are not the only ones who can experience excessive hair loss. The most common cause of hair loss in children may be due to skin infections or other skin diseases. Psoriasis is one example of a skin disorder that can cause hair loss. This is only a temporary hair loss though, and is usually treated with anti-fungal creams that are doctor prescribed. Once the infection or the disorder is cured, the hair would then grow back normally.
Testosterone Hormonal Imbalance
Testosterone, which is the main hormone, found in the male human bodies, is one of the major causes of men experiencing hair loss. This results directly from the response of the hair follicles to the testosterone hormone. However, the hair loss occurs not because of excess production of the hormone, but because the follicles are being too responsive to the hormones. The hair loss occurs when the scalp’s skin changes the hormone testosterone to Dihydrotestosteron. Since most hair follicles are sensitive to Dihydrotestosterone, these hair follicles shrink when they come into contact with this change in the testosterone level, causing the hair in the areas of the front and the top of the head to fall out.
Hair Loss Due to Genetics
Similar to a lot of medical conditions, hair loss may be attributed to the genetic design of the body as well. It is highly probable that if you have relatives who experience excessive hair loss, you will also experience the same condition. Hair loss can be inherited from either side of your parents.
Menopause can also be a cause of hair loss in most women. After the menopause period, the thinning of hair may be more pronounced. More than fifty percent of women may experience hair loss or thinning hair by the age of fifty.
Hairstyles and Hair Treatments
There are certain hairstyles or treatments that can cause hair loss to both men and women. When you style your hair in cornrows, when you use very tight hair rollers, or when you wear pigtails, you are actually pulling the hair on your scalp that can result in another type of hair loss that is medically termed as traction alopecia. This causes scarring on the scalp that may lead to permanent hair loss. Hot oil treatments of the hair and other kinds of hair treatments that make use of chemicals can cause the hair follicles to swell. This often results in scarring of the scalp which will then result in permanent hair loss.
Pregnancy or Child Birth
The normal cycle of hair growth is actually disrupted during the pregnancy period. This type of hair loss is also associated with hormonal imbalance. During this period, a pregnant woman’s body keeps certain hormonal levels very high, causing the retention of hair that should have normally fallen out already. Once the pregnancy is over, the hormonal levels go back to normal and the hair falls out all together, causing a noticeable excessive hair loss. This should not be a problem though, because this is only a temporary hair loss and the cycle of hair growth would go back to normal after pregnancy.
This cause of hair loss is most common in women, when the levels of iron in the female body are low. This should not worry you too much though, because with the right iron supplements, you can avoid thinning hair, ultimately preventing the early symptoms of hair loss.
